In an effort to influence laws and policies that support social justice and respect for human life, the New York State Catholic Conference, which represents the state's bishops, has chastised US President Donald Trump for posting what appear to be artificial intelligence (AI)-generated photos of himself in the Pope's attire.
"There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President," the NYS Catholic Conference stated in a post on X.com on Saturday. Pope Francis was been laid to rest, and the cardinals will soon convene in a solemn conclave to choose a new successor to St. Peter. Don't make fun of us.
Trump shared the image on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, sparking a mix of argument, incredulity, and humor.
The remark was made a few days after Trump joked that if asked who he supported to lead the Catholic Church in the future, "I'd like to be pope, that would be my number one choice."
His remark was made just before the conclave to choose Pope Francis' successor, who died on April 21.
Trump made reference to "a very good" cardinal in New York, who is generally thought to be Archbishop Timothy Dolan, a fervent theological conservative who is adamantly opposed to abortion, even though he did not support any candidate.
Last week, Trump made his first foreign visit since taking office when he went to Pope Francis' funeral.
